15 cheap buys that make you feel rich
While it’s true that the best things in life are free (i.e. love, family, friendship, deep conversations, the outdoors, gratitude, attitude, etc), for a few extra bucks, you can buy a lot of things that make you feel rich, even if your bank account says you’re not.
Here are 15 of those things:
- New shoes. I feel more bougie wearing a pair of these than even a new suit. And you don’t even have to pay a lot for them to feel rich.
- Fresh flowers. I buy a small bouquet from Walmart or Trader Joe’s to make our house look and smell way better. Plus, plants are proven to make humans happier, which is another great way to feel rich.
- Basic pedicure. My wife and daughters swear by these and the accompanying foot and lower leg massage. You don’t have to buy more than a basic nail treatment to feel pampered.
- Grocery delivery. I pay $100 a year to have my groceries delivered to my door step within a few hours of ordering them. It saves a ton of time and makes me feel way richer than I really am.
- Scented candles. Similar to fresh flowers, these affordable little babies make my middle class house smell richer than it really is.
- One fresh ingredient on a pantry dinner. One of my favorite life hacks. Cook a basic box of pasta, add a little oil and garlic salt, then top with fresh parsley for only $1. You can do this with any panty meal to really dress it up.
- Thick towels. They don’t even have to be expensive ones. Just thick. And rich.
- Eating out. This has sadly become off-puttingly expensive in recent years, but you can still find a few good deals on great local food that still makes you feel like a big deal. For instance, my wife and I have really enjoyed splitting Chili’s “3 for Me” smash burger lunch special for $11, which comes with drink, fries, and bottomless chips and salsa. Or we’ll feed our family for under $10 at the Sam’s Club Food Court. Granted, neither of those dining rooms will make you feel rich. But the mere act of eating out probably will with the right mindset.
- Eating outside. This could be an “al fresco” table at a fast food joint, or even on your back patio, backyard, or local park.
- Fresh hair cut. I cut my own so this costs me nothing but my time. But even a basic barber or trim will make you feel like a million bucks.
- New sleepwear. My wife and kids swear by this one, typically buying a few new pairs every summer and winter. I like it, too.
- Clean house, car, laundry—anything! Cleanliness is next to richness almost as much as it is to godliness. For the price of a few cheap cleaning ingredients, you can make almost anything feel rich.
- Good shower head. I upgraded mine recently and it felt like a new shower.
- Savings account. You don’t have to save a lot to feel like you’re getting ahead in life. That’s a rich feeling.
- Investment accounts. Just having one of these is an amazing feeling. Having multiple over many years with compound interest is both figuratively and literally enriching.
