HP outperforming Dell in PC sales
Information Week reports on momentum by HP in the PC industry as compared to Dell’s poor performance as of late. From the article: “The decision to offer additional AMD products comes as Dell’s market share erodes. The company shipped 9.7 million PCs in the second quarter, for a 17.7% market share, marking 11.6% growth in units shipped over the same quarter last year. HP sold 8.1 million PCs in the second quarter, for a 14.8% market share, but racked up growth of 13.8%.”
With Dell having to recall 4 million hard drives because many blow up in flames, the company isn’t quite what it used to be. I used to swear by Dell, but the last PC I bought was an HP, and I love it. What brand do you prefer for your PC needs?

Hi there, Blake. An interesting post for sure. However, thought you might like some additional food for thought to broaden your perspective. Obviously the brand of PC I prefer and never have any trouble with has been a Dell. But on your post you seem to overlook other factors related to Dell and the business. Just a few examples include:
Del has record global growth and is at its best when the industry is consolidating and overall growth slowing. Dell continues to build share. In our recent earnings we announced record, industry leading global share of 19.3 percent. That is a full share point of increase. In addition, you know that the Asia Pacific/Japan region will be an important region for many years to come, which is why we are so pleased to have become the new #2 in Japan and the Asia Pacific/Japan region. Guess who we are replacing? Also, take a look at the trends in emerging countries. They are choosing standards-based technology, which is why Dell is now #1 in China and Brazil in servers. Our unit growth in emerging markets has been exceptionally strong, led by China, Brazil and India.
On Dell’s battery recall (not hard drive issues you noted)I think it is worth noting that even though we could identify only a handful of safety-related problems among the millions of notebooks shipped with batteries from Sony and others, it was enough for us to voluntarily take broad action and work as quickly as possible through the regulatory process. All of that because we put the customer and saftey of the customer first. No one stands between us and our customers. Those familiar with these things tell us we did the right thing, including the National Association of State Fire Marshals, who had this to say: http://www.firemarshals.org/docs/Dean_to_WSJ_8.15.06pdf.pdf
here is another link to check out..and thanks again for the chance to offer some alternative facts here.
I worked for(I was outsourced through Market Star, but I worked in HP’s office in SLC/Sandy just off 106th south) HP when they bought Compaq… the benefits have finally paid off it seems. Only 5 years later.
Great. I recently bought a Dell. Is it going to burst into flames one day while I’m at work and burn my apartment down?
Now you’ve got me worried . . .
