Here’s my current definition: The trick to motivating others is to avoid demotivating them.

How do you motivate others when needed?

Haha! Great counterpoint, jp. I should elaborate: I work for someone who uses very demotiving communication, unecissary criticisms, and actually confuses constructive criticism with negativity (it should be neither positive nor negative, but can be a combination of both).

When I’m treated that way, my desire to go the extra mile in my work gets heavily curbed. I do the bare minimum. So in essance, by avoiding demotivating technciques, communication, etc, I think one can be well on their way to do a good job at motivating others.
