Minor League Baseball coach killed by line drive
The Associated Press reports: “The batting coach for the Tulsa Drillers was pronounced dead at a hospital Sunday evening after being struck in the head by a line drive as he stood in the first-base coach’s box during a Texas League game with the Arkansas Travelers, police said.”
Sad story. I’d wouldn’t be surprised, however, if the coach was looking elsewhere when the foul ball was hit. That said, I still support wooden bats in both college and high school as both the majors and minors currently use.

I’ve seen some nasty injuries with wood bats. Very nasty. Even in the minors, guys using wood bats hit the ball so hard that I’m surprised more people aren’t SERIOUSLY injured by stray balls.
The down side of the wood bat is no grip (pine tar and tape can fix that). But, bats still fly out of players hands all the time during games when I’m working for the SL Bees. Last week a bat went into the crowd. Luckily nobody was injured.
Last year, a woman wasn’t paying attention, and a stray bat hit her in the face and caused some serious damage.
Nevertheless, I think it would be fun to use wood in our league. They do have wood bat tournaments in the MSBL.
First of all, I am sorry to hear that someone die this way. I hate metal bats, they don’t even sound like baseball.
