It may have thinned… but I checked out the “sales” positions available on Craigslist and the other job boards the other day and was just floored by how many positions are available for sales people! I think the problem has to do with perception – of salespeople and viewing one’s self a “sales person.” In many ways every single position in a company is sales and marketing – or at the very least every position that interacts with a customer/client.
