Here’s what all 45 of my songs are about

Over the last five years, I’ve written over 60 songs and have professionally recorded 45 of them across three albums and one extended play.

I’m biased, but with the help of my audio engineering brother-in-law (Hi, Adam!), the vast majority of those songs are radio-quality.

As my band is entering the recording studio this summer to record five more songs, here’s what each of my already released songs is about.

Mr. Mustache (2020)

  1. Under Quarantine. Pandemic lockdowns sucked. This is me raging against the machine.
  2. Turn A Corner. Here’s me talking myself into making a change.
  3. Shrug. As someone who likes to talk a lot, I equally love to shrug my way through disagreements and nonsense.
  4. Show Me. This was written from the perspective of a friend who was having intimacy problems with his now ex-wife.
  5. Control What You Can. When life gets you down, focus only on what you can control.
  6. Mr. Mustache. We all feel stupid sometimes. I say own it.
  7. No Longer The Same. The world is changing and that’s okay.
  8. Victim. A tongue-in-cheek song about playing the victim card.
  9. Bad Friends. Written for a friend who was frustrated by some so-called friends of his.
  10. Time Isn’t Money. The two aren’t the same. Never let anyone tell you otherwise.
  11. Going Up. I wrote this song about my cover band that was starting to find success.
  12. Minuteman. I’m not going to tell you what this is about. You’ll just have to figure it out for yourself.

Less Bad (2022)

  1. Back In The Race. I wrote this right after releasing Mr. Mustache. It captures the feeling of finding your groove again.
  2. Ricky’s Song. I wrote this love letter to immigrants about my good friend Ricky.
  3. Sorta Social. I’m no longer the social butterfly I was when I was younger and I’m totally cool with that.
  4. I Did It. The feeling of accomplishment. I wrote this right before wrapping up the recording of Less Bad and was able to include it on the record.
  5. Baggage. I wrote this for two close friends who were having a hard time letting go of the past.
  6. Every Man For Himself. This song is nonsense. I simply combined disjointed thoughts and phrases together and liked how it turned out.
  7. Run Away. This is my anthem to the one in seven kids who run away from home.
  8. Carry On. I wrote this about my father’s impending death and even recorded the vocals the day he died.
  9. Killing My Drive. This is me raging against negative peer pressure.
  10. I Won’t Go. This is a tongue-in-cheek direction of teenage thinking.
  11. Hold On. I wrote these lyrics for a friend whose son was going through a difficult time.
  12. Where Is Home. This one is about feeling lost in transition.
  13. Alright Here. This is my love letter to planet Earth and zero desire to ever leave it for the blackness and bleakness of outer space.
  14. Call It Quits. This makes fun of how quickly married people are sometimes to threaten divorce when they’re mad at each other.

The Breakers (2023)

  1. Cold Hands, Hot Feet. I literally suffer from cold hands and hot feet and metaphorically suffer from the same some time.
  2. Do I Still Got It? Dealing with self-doubt as we age.
  3. I Wanna Be French. Feeling frustrated with my lack of passion, love, and creativity sometimes.
  4. Party (Roman’s Song). Written for my friend who loves to party and loves hard rock.
  5. Fancy Hotel. Feeling loneliness in amazing places.
  6. Don’t Feed The Animals. My song about staying away from negative people.
  7. High Risk. Written for the young woman who eventually became my wife.
  8. Long Hair On My Carpet. Here’s me expressing frustration with all the long hair I deal with living in a house full of girls.
  9. Travel The World. My love letter to travel (and home).
  10. Jet Lag In Madrid. Me having no energy in an otherwise exciting situation.
  11. Harm’s Way. Self-doubt about the decisions we often make.
  12. Calling You. This is about a high school boy trying to ask a girl out.
  13. Inner Space. This song is about the mind games we often play with ourselves.
  14. Clear Eyes, Full Heart. This song is about winning with the right attitude.

Come Clean (2024)

  1. You’re Telling Me. Here’s my raging against eternal pessimists.
  2. Leaves Must Be Lying. This is about feeling absolutely alive and fully in love heading into an otherwise “dying” world.
  3. Walk The Winter. This was written for my mom right after she lost her husband to dementia.
  4. Cottonwoods. This is my love letter to Utah, which I’ve called home for the last 22 years.
  5. Word Games. This is about how each of us often say things we don’t mean because we’re scared to say the truth.
