My Chromebook is a fast tablet with a faster keyboard
I’ve been using Google’s new Chromebook for over a month now. I use it a lot, often times reaching for it over my Macbook.
Why? It starts and stops faster. In a single second even. It connects to the internet faster. In seconds, mind you. The thing is quick and lightweight. Much like a tablet computer or iPad.
Better still, the Chromebook has a full-size but no-nonsense keyboard, making it the faster and better input device when compared to tablets. And it has a lot more “apps” than closed-system tablets.
Admittedly, the trackpad is finicky. But overall, I’m very impressed with the Chromebook, especially as it’s replaced some of the functions I used to prefer on either my desktop or laptop. It might be the best living-room laptop ever made. And it’s a great travel option as well.
If manufacturers price this thing under $300, I think it will make significant waves in the computing world upon release this summer.

Okay. Can’t handle HD video though. 🙁

That would be the understatement of the year. The one I have is absolutely horrible. Using it for awhile trained me to feel a twinge of pain ever time I reached for the trackpad.
Leaving that out, the other problem I have is that the “apps” are not powerful enough yet. For instance, I’d really need an ssh app. If you could have something like that to run inside one of the tabs it would be great. Same for other traditional non-browser apps, like IRC and Skype.
My experience with the trackpad hasn’t been as bad as yours. It’s definitely usable. But I avoid it when dealing with long form written articles in Google docs. Not a problem in short bursts however, a al tablet computing.
I just got one in from UPS less than an hour ago. Needless to say, I’m stoked.
My computer needs break down in two categories:
1) Work
2) Everything else
I do most of my work on a power-horse in the office, but I do some on a desktop at home. (Visual Studio, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc… All desktop type of stuff)
Everything else had primary been delegated to my iPhone, but now I think the Cr-48 will get most of it. It’s almost all browser based stuff anyway.
How are the graphics?
