Writers: No need to describe death as “tragic”
I often read the following: “the tragic death of so-and-so.” I don’t mean to be insensitive, but when is death not tragic? Loss of life is always tragic, right, so why dilute the adjective? Agree, disagree? Should writers call death “tragic” or just call it “death”?
Well, I could see how “tragic” could be used — like for a freak accident or the death of a child. Somehow, that makes things feel more tragic . . . But when writers start describing all deaths as tragic, the word sort of loses its meaning . . .
